MCom Admission Fees: What the First Payment May Leave Out

Payment via “Pay Now” on an admissions portal might just be to complete the next step. Examination charges may be collected nearer to the semester examinations. A security deposit may be part of the first payment and be refundable after.

These details matter when comparing MCom admission fees. One single number in a college directory can't tell when a payment is due, if it will repeat or what happens if a student withdraws.

Read the fee heads individually

Begin by looking at the current fee schedule for the specific M.Com programme and Academic session. Check for differences in tuition, admission/registration fees and examination fees, and student funds and deposits. The names and amounts are different among institutions.

Tuition is the core teaching fee, but its billing period needs checking. Figure can be per semester, year or for the entire programme. Examination fees can be collected separately.

Charges described as development, library or other student funds should be included in the budget where applicable. A refundable security deposit should be included in the total payable in advance but distinguished from the net cost.

If the portal displays a combined total, request a breakdown. The student-entitlement guidance issued by the University Grants Commission requires universities to state their fees, other charges and the refund policy in their prospectuses.

Identify repeat payments

A first-year bill is just part of the picture for a programme that takes two years of academic study to complete. The fee for admission may even be a lump-sum amount, with tuition and examination fee paid periodically.

Create a basic estimate in three columns – payable at admission; payable later; refundable – subject to rules. Put the actual due date next to each entry. If a fee is listed as an annual fee, find out if it will be changing for the upcoming school year.

This also comes in handy when making instalment comparisons. A smaller initial payment may help to alleviate the immediate stress, but the overall amount to be paid would not be decreased. Check with the institution as to whether instalments are allowed and if there is a set deadline, and if there are any late-payment penalties.

Some M.Com programmes are structured differently or have varying lengths. Don't take the present prospectus for the programme for granted, and assume that all the postgraduate courses in commerce follow the same fee structure.

Before paying, verify that you qualify for a concession

Scholarships/reimbursements/fee concessions may be based on category, family income, merit, place of residence or other scheme requirements as applicable. Just because a student is eligible for admission does not automatically mean that he/she is available.

Read the relevant notice about scholarships with the course prospectus. Investigate if the benefit is a reduction of the bill or paid following the admission. That difference has implications on how much a family has to come up with on the payment date.

Be aware of the change of mind cost!

Sometimes students accept one M.Com seat while waiting for another admission decision. The dates and process of withdrawal then take on a monetary significance.

Refunds shall be as per UGC fee-refund rules and/or subsequent session-specific notices. The percentage returned may be related to the time of the written withdrawal request to the institution. There may also be varying treatment for different types of payments.

Look for the notice of refund, the final date for admission and the cancellation procedure. Keep payment receipt and any notice of withdrawal request. A handwritten promise to return the money is not the right thing to do.

Refundable deposit and tuition fee refund are different issues; read conditions for refundable deposit and tuition fee refund.

Use the Record of Admission

The Directorate of Higher Education (DHE) of the Haryana government has introduced a centralised online admission platform for undergraduate and postgraduate programs for students seeking admission via participating colleges in the state. The information about course availability, eligibility and fees should be verified from the current information on the portal and institutional notices.

Never pay via unsecured channels or individuals accounts. Please check the sum and payee information on the authorised page and keep the receipt and transaction number.

A full payment calendar is the best comparison of MCom admission fees. It indicates what needs to be paid right away, what will be collected in the course of the classes and what may eventually be returned. The apparent difference between two fee quotations is easily explained with that document.
